Piercing After-care Instructions

How to clean your ears:

  1. Thoroughly wash your hands before touching your newly pierced ears.
  2. Use a mild liquid soap (like Johnson & Johnson baby wash) to clean the front and back of your ears twice a day for the next 6 weeks. Dry the area gently with a Q-tip.
  3. You may also use sterile saline wipes for cleaning your ears. Avoid using hydrogen peroxide or alcohol wipes on the site. Dry with a Q-tip after using the wipe.
  4. You do not need to rotate the Blomdahl medical grade plastic studs to prevent them from adhering to the skin.
  5. Cover your ears when applying hair spray, perfume, make up, etc.
  6. Be caution when dressing to prevent the earring from catching.
  7. Try to delay swimming in pools, lakes, or oceans as long as possible. If you swim, clean and dry your ears as instructed in steps 2 and 3.
  8. After at least 6 weeks (ideally 12 weeks), carefully remove the original piercing studs, preferably after a shower or bath.
    1. Wash your hands.
    2. Hold the earring’s jewelry part with one hand.
    3. Gently wiggle the back with the other hand until it loosens.
    4. Remove the earring from the earlobe.
  9. Immediately replace the earrings with other post-type earrings. We recommend hypo-allergenic options like surgical titanium, solid gold, or plastic.

Risks of Piercing Procedure:

  • Infection. Breaking the skin poses infection risks. We minimize this risk by using sterile technique, single use piercing cassettes, and clear aftercare instructions.
    • Signs of infection might include spreading redness 48 hours post-piercing, pus/drainage, fever, or intense pain.
  • Pain. Brief and akin to a vaccination. We provide numbing cream to alleviate discomfort.

Keloid formation. Large, raised scars. They tend to run in families and are more likely in individuals with dark skin pigmentation. Keloids can often develop at the piercing site and are three times more likely if the piercing occurs after the age of 11.
