What are well child exams?

Routine well-child exams ensure your child stays healthy and protected against serious diseases. While everyone knows to call the pediatrician when a child is sick, it’s equally crucial to schedule regular visits when the child is well. At Mid City Pediatrics, we believe that well-child care is the foundation for keeping kids at their healthiest.

Your child will have numerous well-child visits during their early years, as rapid growth and development occur during this period. You’ll visit the office frequently in the first three years and then annually thereafter. These visits allow us to monitor growth, development, provide age-appropriate guidance, address concerns, and build a lasting connection with your child and family.

Typical Well Child Schedule

  • Infancy-1 year Check-Up Schedule: 2 weeks, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, and 15 months.
  • 1 year-3 year Check-Up Schedule: 18 months, 2 years, 2 ½ years (sometimes), and 3 years.
  • 4 year and above Check-Up Schedule: Yearly check-ups recommended.

During a visit, our care team assesses your child’s physical, behavioral, developmental, and emotional status. These assessments include physical measurements, patient history reviews, emotional/behavioral assessments, screenings, age-appropriate vaccinations, and necessary lab tests.

School Physicals/Sports Physicals/Camp Physicals

Your child might require a physical examination for camp, sports participation, or certain schools. Scheduling their physical ensures a proactive approach to their health. At Mid City Pediatrics, these examinations allow our pediatrician to monitor your child’s growth, administer vaccinations, and address health issues. We provide physicals for various reasons, such as the new school year or upcoming sports seasons. Different physical exams may be combined within the same year.

  • School Physicals:  Provides an opportunity to examine year-by-year changes and progress. The younger years focus on developmental progress and vaccinations, while adolescent years tend to be more focused on psychological and physical changes. This exam for teens gives them a chance to ask any questions relating to adolescent issues such as drinking, smoking, drugs, sexual activity, and depression.
  • Sports Physicals:  Required by athletic leagues and schools. These exams check your child’s vitals, joints, flexibility, and vision to prevent injury during sports seasons. It’s advisable to obtain sports physicals at least 6 weeks before the season starts, giving the child ample time to correct any issues. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against mass physicals or physicals performed at urgent care centers. Your child’s pediatrician is trained to identify and treat both medical and bone/joint problems that are commonly seen in young athletes.
  • Camp Physicals:  Also commonly referred to as a pre-participation physical, ensures that your child can safely participate in camp activities. While not always mandatory, they’re still a good way to monitor your child’s health.

Many of these physicals may be combined. Plan in advance and speak to your doctor if your child requires multiple forms. Schedule your child’s appointment with one of our pediatricians at Mid City Pediatrics. Call our office at 318-221-2225 today!
